Thalassemia Eradication in India – How businesses can drive change
Project Proposal in Brief: Thalassemia is a crippling disease in India that affects 42 million
across the nation. Once affected, the patient needs to go through regular blood transfusions,
to be able to extend their lives by another fifteen days. SAHAVE’s comprehensive project will
ensure their pain points are addressed, and the disease stops from perpetuating.
There are 42 million people in India suffering from the debilitating and challenging disease of
Thalassemia. As the disease disrupts the normal production of hemoglobin and healthy red blood cells, children with severe forms of thalassemia (such as thalassemia major) usually die under five years of age. The average life expectancy of patients suffering from thalassemias is about 30 years, particularly in South East Asian countries facing a resource crunch.
